Terence “Bud” Crawford has risen to the top of boxing and the pound-for-pound lists very quickly in his career, after making himself known to the world of the sport in 2012.
After featuring in three consecutive bouts on HBO in 2012, Crawford went on to capture a lightweight belt in faraway Scotland against the then titleholder Ricky Burns in 2014.
Crawford went on to make last year very spectacular after making successful defenses against Yuriorkis Gamboa, whom he knocked out in grand style in the ninth round, before wiping out Raymundo Beltran en route to winning the 2014 Fighter of the Year award.
In April 2015, Crawford moved up in weight to go toe-to-toe with Thomas Dulorme, knocking him out in the sixth round to add the vacant title to his belt collection.
On Saturday, October 24, 2015, he impressively outclassed Dierry Jean in his first title defense in front of his home crowd of roughly eleven thousand at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
This fight was key to Crawford’s claim of being ready to take on Manny Pacquiao in what will be the final bout of the Filipino’s illustrious career on April 9, 2016. Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan are the other top two contenders to get the nod to fight Manny Pacquiao, who is ready to bow out of the sport.
Crawford troubled Jean throughout the bout with his confusing southpaw stance, knocking down the Haitian boxer with a solid right hook just before the sound of the bell for the end of round 1. Jean sustained a cut over his right eye in round 5.
“Bud” continued to pummel Jean, taking him to the canvas for the second time in the ninth round, albeit surviving another round. Jean was rocked early in the tenth round with a right and left combo, which sent him straight into the ropes, prompting referee Tony Weeks to end the action with 2:30 on the clock.
The comprehensive victory definitely places Crawford in a position to face Pacquiao. However, it is up to Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters, and the latter to secure a deal for the bout. According to Arum, Pacquiao could drop to 140 pounds instead fighting at 147 pounds if the fight deal is sealed.
