The two most successful clubs in England prepare to lock horns this Sunday and it promises to be an eagerly contested fixture as always.
Liverpool are flying high in the English Premier League so far with an unbeaten record since the start of the campaign earning them 1st place with a total of 42 points.
Manchester United however have had a stop start to the season and are currently lingering in 6th place. Jose Mourinho’s men are a staggering 16 points apart from Liverpool after 16 games and the future does not look bright for the Red Devils.
Will they get one over the league leaders at Anfield? Will the Reds record their 14th Premier League victory this season over the weekend? Will we see a deadlock?
Ghanafans.com takes you through the head to head of both teams and coaches, team news, combined starting XI, key players and of course the possible outcome of the game.
HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool and Manchester United have already had the pleasure of battling each other on 228 occasions and Manchester United have the advantage with 88 wins to Liverpool’s 75.
Their first ever encounter was as far back as 1894 where Liverpool beat United then known as Newton Heath by two goals to nil in a test match.
The most recent fixture was in Old Trafford on 10th March this year and Marcos Rashford hit a double in Manchester’s 2-1 win over Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Liverpool have not fared well against the 20 time Premier League winners in the last 10 fixtures, registering only a single win and losing 5 (1W 4D 5L).
Liverpool will have to put in a big performance to get a good result out of this one and solidify their position at the top.
Klopp and Mourinho will face off for the tenth time as managers and the German tactician leads the battle with three wins and two defeats (3W 4D 2L).
Klopp will be looking to make it win number 4 over Jose and the Portuguese treble winner will hope to level the field against his rival.
The Red Devils will be without the services of Victor Lindelof (hamstring), Alexis Sanchez (hamstring), Chris Smalling (foot) and Luke Shaw (knock) this weekend.
The likes of Marcos Rojo, Scott McTominay, Diogo Dalot, Anthony Martial and Matteo Darmian are in doubt to be fit for this big duel.
In the case of Liverpool, Joel Matip (Broken Collar Bone), Joe Gomez (Broken Ankle), Nathaniel Clyne (knock), Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot) and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain (ACL knee injury) have been ruled out of the tie. Dominic Solanke and James Milner are all doubts for the fixture.
This XI is dominated by Liverpool players and it is no surprise as Manchester United have been poor collectively and individually this season.
Allison gets the nod in goal due to his superb display so far and have of course amassed the most clean sheets (10).
Van Djik is without doubt a mainstay in the heart of the defense. Jose Mourinho’s constant rotation of his center backs made it difficult to make cases for them and since good candidates in Joe Gomez and Victor Lindelof have been ruled out, Dejan Lovren partners Van Djik.
Andrew Robertson takes the left back slot due to his impressive displays since wearing the Liverpool shirt and Ashley Young completes the defensive set-up at right back after a superb performance last week.
The midfield was very tricky to choose from as both outfits have struggled in that area.
The highly inconsistent displays of Matic means Milner gets the nod in midfield with Paul Pogba and Naby Keita.
Pogba and Keita have not been at their best so far this season but they do of course have immense technical ability over the rest available and do just enough to make the team.
The attack is led by Mohammed Salah. The Egyptian has picked up form after a slow start to the season and his 10 goals makes him first choice in attack.
Sadio Mane has also been doing well so far and that is enough for him to take the left side. The center goes to Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman has been very important to the Red Devils in recent games and his 7 goals makes him the perfect candidate to complete the trio as Firmino has been a shadow of himself this season.
Mohammed Salah will be in the spotlight once again after scoring a hat trick against Bournemouth last weekend.
The 2018 PFA player of the year will hope to improve on his 10 goals so far and stake a claim for another golden boot award.
He also leads the team with assists so far this season with four. His team mates will depend on him to make the difference on Sunday.
Anthony Martial is proving a point as a key player for Manchester United this season and his 7 goals so far have shown how important he is for Manchester United in terms of finding the net.
He was exceptional against Chelsea and he will hope to put in a similar performance against the Reds.
This will be a very tight game and history has shown that form does not count when the two sides face each other.
I expect Jose Mourinho to set up his team well enough to thwart the attacks of Liverpool as he did last season. A goal less draw seems likely.
