“There were definitely a few offers to weigh up. You respect every single offer and you weigh up the pros and cons. You decide by yourself and also with your family and agent to find out which is the best offer. It came down to wanting to join a club that will help my development and facilitate my movement in the realm of association football and that is why I joined Willem II. It is a great club with a rich history and it is rather unfortunate that the club is yet to win the Eredivisie. The spirit is stirred now and the club has begun to assert and with the tactical nous of Jurgen Streppel, we should be in a very good position to wrestle the big clubs for the title soon.” He quipped.
The 18 year old Ghanaian who is tipped to be a cult hero at the club is yet to make a senior appearance in an official match for the club but has had cameo appearances in friendlies but is expected to give Jurgen Streppel nightmares after pulling out some stunning performances with the U-19 and the Second team scoring 3 goals in 3 games.
“Well, I have played 2 league games with the U-19, scoring 2 and a game with the second team, scoring 1. With the senior team, I’ve featured in 2 friendlies- a game against Gent. I was introduced in the last 20 minutes of the game and assisted a goal which helped earn us a draw against the Belgians. I lasted 80 minutes in the other game and it ended in a goalless draw.” He said
Fans who daily visit the 15,000 capacity Koning stadium have been blown away by Abubakar’s trickery and directness and is already tipped to be an integral member of Jurgen Streppel’s team next season and the player himself thinks same but believes hard work is the key.
“Here, it is how you can contribute to the team. Every single player will get his time and chance. It’s about doing a job for the team and I believe it won’t be long my time will come for me to prove my worth”.
