- Mexico completes comeback to clinch top spot
- Germany and Chile share the spoils and more….
The 10th edition of this showcase is heating up as we approach the last round of fixtures in the group stages. New Zealand are now confirmed to be out of the tournament and they look likely to bow out with their winless streak intact.
Cameroon and Australia are also in danger of going home early. Portugal, Mexico, Germany and Chile are on course to claim the coveted trophy in Russia.
Which country will prove to be the strongest? Lets take you through the second round results in the respective groups.
Germany 1-1 Chile
The world champions faced off against 2015 and 2016 Copa America winners Chile in an exciting encounter that ended in a stalemate.
Alexis Sanchez got off the mark in this competition after just six minutes, pouncing on a mistake by the German defense and placing it in off the woodwork.
La Roja were in control of the tie until Emre Can’s lung busting run paved way for Lars Stindl to get a tap in with four minutes left to half time.
Chile and Germany will be happy with the points shared as they move closer to the semi finals. La Roja take first place in the group B standings and Die Mannschaft follow closely behind in second place.
Cameroon 1-1 Australia
The match between the 2017 AFCON champions and the AFC Asian Cup winners failed to provide a winner.
Cameroon took the lead on the stroke of half time through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s strike and were confident of taking maximum points by the start of the second half.
Australia however had other ideas and gave their reply in the 60th minute. Mark Milligan cooly converted from the spot to bring the Socceroos back into the game.
Both sides would have hoped to get a better result in the end. The Indomitable Lions will need to record a win against Germany to give them any hope of qualification.
The same goes for the Socceroos as they prepare to face Chile. Australia are currently in 3rd place and Cameroon places 4th on the group B table.
Russia 0-1 Portugal
The Euro 2016 winners grabbed their first ever win in this tournament against the hosts Russia.
The goal came from captain and record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo in the 8th minute. The Real Madrid superstar easily headed in a sumptuous cross from Raphael Guerreiro.
He has also increased his record tally for his country to 74 in 141 appearances. Portugal now have a great chance of moving to the semi-final, placing 2nd in the group A standings and Russia now places 3rd.
Mexico 2-1 New Zealand
El Tri moved to the summit of the group A table with a brilliant comeback to grab a victory against New Zealand. All Whites went ahead with 3 minutes left to half time through their main striker and captain Chris Wood.
Mexico got their equalizer in the 54th minute. Benfica player Raul Jimenez got the goal for the 2015 CONCACAF Cup winners. Oribe Peralta completed the comeback for the Mexican side with his finish coming in the 72nd minute.
Mexico managed to put themselves in pole position to qualify for the semis with the result. They are now in 1st place in the group A standings and New Zealand lie in 4th place and still without a victory in 11 Confederations Cup matches.
