The business of of the competition is fast approaching. The world now anticipates what will become of the teams who managed to reach the semi finals of the 10th edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup. Congratulations to Portugal, Mexico, Germany and Chile for reigning supreme in their respective groups. Which of these four top countries will move on to the final? Which of them will go home with the trophy? Lets take you through the results in the last group fixtures.
Chile 1-1 Australia
La Roja secured a place in the semi finals after salvaging a draw against the Socceroos in their last group game. Australia were the first to strike and it was James Troisi who got the goal in the 42nd minute.
Chile fought hard to get back into the contest and they got their answer through Martin Rodriguez’s strike in the 67th minute. Australia will not be happy with the result as they are now officially out of the contest and will not take part in the semi finals.
Chile however will be happy as they have made it to the semi final stage of the Confederations Cup with their first ever appearance. They will face the Euro 2016 winners Portugal. La Roja placed 2nd after the result and Australia placed 3rd.
Germany 3-1 Cameroon
The young German side booked their place in the next round of the Confederations Cup after beating the AFCON 2017 winners Cameroon in game three of the group stage fixtures. Kerem Demirbay drew first blood for Die Mannschaft in the 48th minute.
Cameroon couldn’t have wished for a worse start to the second half and matters got worse after Ernest Mabouka was sent off for a high boot in the 64th minute.
Germany quickly capitalized on the one man advantage and got the second goal through Timo Werner in the 66th minute. Vincent Aboubakar gave hope to the Cameroonian faithful with his strike in the 78th minute.
That little hope was snuffed out three minutes later. Timo Werner got his brace to put the match beyond doubt in the 81st minute.
Germany managed to top group B with the win and they will face Mexico in the semi final. Cameroon however had a disappointing end to their adventure, placing 4th in their group
New Zealand 0-4 Portugal
The Euro 2016 winners showed their class with a 4-0 thrashing of All Whites in their last group game.
Cristiano Ronaldo started the show by sending the New Zealand keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute. Bernardo Silva doubled the advantage four minutes later with a close range finish.
Andre Silva got in on the act with 10 minutes left to the end of the game, blasting the ball into the net from a short distance. Nani grabbed the final goal of the game in injury time, few minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Fernando Santos and his men will be happy with the result and will prepare to face Chile in the semis.
New Zealand however will be disappointed with their output and their terrible run continues. They have now gone 12 games without a win in the Confederations Cup (1D 11L).
Mexico 2-1 Russia
Mexico pulled off another impressive comeback to claim a place in the semi finals of the showcase. El Tri came from a goal down to end with a 2-1 victory against the hosts Russia in their final group game.
Aleksandr Samedov scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute. The Russians looked set to qualify for the next round until Nestor Araujo pounced on a goalkeeping error by Akinfeev to grab the equalizer in the 30th minute.
Mexico completed their comeback through Hirving Lozano in the 52nd minute thanks to another goalkeeping error by Akinfeev.
The hosts lost hope of turning the game around after Yuri Zhirkov was given his marching orders in the 68th minute.
El Tri placed 2nd and will face the 2014 FIFA World Cup winners Germany. Russia placed 3rd and failed to book a place in the semis in the end.
